Good Numbers for Indiana
Business Climate More Favorable than in Neighboring States

By Mike Rozow
Chamber President and Chief Operating Officer of the Dearborn County Economic Development Initiative

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation recently sent along some figures comparing the cost of doing business in nine Midwestern states.

And the clear-cut winner is – Indiana.

Indiana was lowest in these four categories based on the a company with taxable income of $1 million and 100 employees:

•  Total State Business Taxes  $151,136 (High: Minnesota $266,135)
•  Average Workers Comp Annual Premium:  $47,236 (High: Illinois $135,926)
•  Average Workers Comp Rate:  $1.23 (High: Ohio $3.32)
•  Average Unemployment Insurance:  $18,900 (High: Minnesota $61,360)

National news media and others have taken note of Indiana’s  competitiveness.  Indiana was the only Midwest state among 11 states cited by Chief Executive magazine in its list of “Best Places for Business.”  Forbes magazine included Indiana in a list of seven states highlighted for low cost of doing business.  Indiana was the only Midwest state on the Tax Foundation’s list for Best Tax Environment.
